Noncedo Gxekwa, a creative entrepreneur hailing from South Africa, possesses a profound fascination for people, fashion, light, and historic architecture. On this particular day, she embarks on an exploration of a notable building in Johannesburg known as Transwerke. Nestled at the base of Constitution Hill, Transwerke was originally designed in 1939 by the acclaimed architect Gordon Leith. Initially, it served as the Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital and a residence for midwives. However, the building ceased operations in 1983, subsequently falling into disuse. In 2018, the structure underwent a transformation and was revitalised into a creative hub, catering to visual artists, designers, jewellery manufacturers, and other professionals within the creative sector.
